Bootfitter's Notes

We've been waiting for Salomon to build a true low-volume touring boot, and the Shift Alpha BOA 130 delivers. If you're familiar with the S/Pro Alpha, you'll immediately recognize the fit. The shell shape, heel pocket, and overall anatomical feel are nearly identical, making this an easy transition for skiers who love their alpine Alpha boots but want to start touring.

On the descent, the Shift Alpha is one of the strongest touring boots we've skied. While it won't quite match the absolute power and damping of a dedicated alpine boot, the gap is surprisingly small. It drives modern skis confidently, rewards aggressive skiing, and never feels like you're giving up much performance simply because it has a walk mode.

Flip the lever into walk mode, and the boot offers a smooth, natural stride with excellent range of motion for skinning. It's a true 50/50 boot that feels equally at home touring before dawn as it does lapping the resort.

The closest competitor is the Atomic Hawx Ultra XTD 130. The Hawx is a bit stiffer and offers a more race-like, precise feel, while the Shift Alpha has a smoother, more progressive flex and a noticeably plusher liner. If you value comfort and suspension over maximum precision, many skiers will prefer the Salomon.

Fit-wise, the Shift Alpha shares most of its DNA with the S/Pro Alpha. The length runs true to size, the lower heel pocket is secure, and the instep is surprisingly generous for a low-volume boot. The cuff fit is on the more precise side, so skiers with larger calves may want to explore higher-volume options. Both the shell and liner are heat moldable, making it straightforward for a bootfitter to dial in the fit.

For skiers who split time between the resort and the backcountry, the Shift Alpha BOA 130 is one of the most compelling low-volume touring boots available, offering excellent downhill performance without sacrificing the efficiency needed for long days on the skin track.
